KMD2326 Hangin out the Window by Kit Hevron Mahoney

Today's painting is to express "stepping out of the box". I love the way dogs hang out the car window sniffing the air and figuring out everything about their surroundings with their noses! This is my dog Farley who goes nuts when we get on the mountain roads and he smells the fresh air!

Gold Splendor

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

I had started this yesterday as a demonstration in my pastel class. I wanted to show the effects of doing a light application of NuPastel and water (ended up being my coffee) on Wallis paper as an undertone or foundation for your painting and building up with layers of soft pastel...students really did some exceptional paintings using this approach.

KMP5025 Lush Springtime by Kit Hevron Mahoney

For a little change of pace I am posting a pastel painting instead of an oil. This is a springtime scene from the Baker Street historic neighborhood here in Denver. Every spring brings a new array of painting subject matter. I can't wait to see what comes up this year, especially after our first good snow of the year.

KMD2320 Glorious Summer Morning by Kit Hevron Mahoney

Now that we are expecting snow in Denver (hopefully) I am jumping ahead to the cool, crisp sunlit mornings of summer. These hollyhocks were so beautifully backlit that they seemed to shimmer. It is a challenge to create on canvas what the eye sees and the spirit feels!

It is good to clean out closets and studios as one finds such so many photos that have been waiting to be painted! We are in the process of clearing out our basement space to make room for teaching classes soon and I have found so many things I didn't think I would forget when I put them away. Here is one.

Cheyenne Farmer's Market

Thursday, March 19th, 2009
This was a study of the Farmer's market in Cheyenne. It's painted on a green Ambersand Pastelbord with a heavy underpainting of pastels brushed in with water. I should have given it a little more time to dry but was anxious to get in with the "sticks".I've attached a few of the steps for you to view....sorry I didn't get more along the way

Blocked in some major shapes of the market.

Laid in a heavy application of warm and cool pastels and using a stiff brush mixed with a little water I brushed the pastel into the tooth of the board. This is a much heavier application than I generally would start with.

KMD2317 Around the Next Bend

I have wanted to paint this scene since last summer when I photographed it outside of Lake City, Colorado. I went there with my infamous travel companion, Pat, after a harrowing ride in my sport utility up a really rough 4 wheel drive road. We were attempting to drive the Alpine Loop to the American Basin that hosts a plethora of wildflowers. Unfortunately we missed the flowers as there had been such a huge snowfall that the snow was still melting there!

KMP5030 Balcony Flowers by Kit Hevron Mahoney

This is a scene that I created in pastels from a trip I took several years ago to Savannah, Georgia. We were there during the Azalea bloom which was so magnificent that if I painted most of the flower scenes I found there, no one in Colorado would believe the rich abundance of blooms there. The combination of amazing architecture, rich history and lush display of trees and flowering plants was absolutely breathtaking.

KMD2316 Illuminated Poppies by Kit Hevron Mahoney

I painted a similar scene to this a few weeks ago and I was enthralled with the great light cast on the poppies in this painting. This created such a variety of colors that were such fun to mix on the palette and apply to create this scene. Nature just never ceases to amaze me and continually keeps me humbled when trying to create what has been provided for my eyes!

KMD2314 Poppies and Pickett Fence

I have found another wonderful photo taken several years ago while visiting my stepson in Seattle. My husband and I took the ferry to the San Juan Island where we found this incredible scene. My favorite thing to do in the Northwest is to ride the Ferry boats to wherever they may take me! It is amazing how many places in the world that poppies grow and thrive!

KMD2311 Winter Reflections by Kit Hevron Mahoney

Since winter is on its way out I somehow was inspired to paint this scene that I photographed on the way to Taos, New Mexico a few years ago. I found the photograph while cleaning out our storage area in the gallery making room to teach classes there soon. It is such fun to find pictures that have been hidden away as I get to relive the time that I took it.
